A bad day fishing is better than a good day working!!

October 27, 1999

Caught this 18 pounder on the American River this morning, October 27, 1999. She was just beautiful. Still had scales and was as chrome and bright as she would have been on the ocean. There are still some bright fish around, although they are few and far between.

Salmon Fishing the American River 10-6-99

Had a great day fishing with my friend David Eyster. He doesn't get much time to fish so today was a treat for him. He caught this 22 pound Salmon on a Glow in the Dark Flat Fish and was he happy. For a while, I thought he was going to have an acident, but he didn't.

This is my fishing partner, Earl Wilson. I don't know why the frown because he is holding the fish of the day. A 30 Pound King Salmon!! In beautiful shape. In fact, this was the largest fish we saw ALL DAY. It was caught on a T50 glow in the dark Flat Fish.

From time to time this page will be updated to depict the current fishing conditions and the catch that has been taken.

In the late spring fish were in the upper Feather River in large numbers. They were hitting the usual offerings, QuikFish, Flat Fish and spinners. The fish seemed to be larger this year than they have been in the past. Many fish in the upper 20's were landed and some as large as the upper 40's and I heard tell of a 52 pounder being caught. Then the river was raised and the fishing slowed down. On July 15 the Sacramento River opened. Fishing was great at Verona, the mouth of the Feather River, for about a month then they started to lower the river and the fishing slowed down again. Then in early September the fish started showing in the Discovery park area and slowly but surly got better and better. The fish seemed to be smaller than usual and Jacks were plentiful. Few fish over 20 pounds were caught. Now it seems the run is just about over. For the past two weeks the fishing has been getting slower and slower. In fact, last week there were two days that I did not get a hit. NOT EVEN THE SMELL OF A FISH! If you are going to get then, you better get out fast and fish hard. It is not easy right now and if you check the boats out, there are fewer and fewer of them at the mouth. This is indicative of the intensity of the bite. This morning when I was returning form the upper reaches of the lower American River, there were only 8 boats at the mouth. What a difference, last week at this time there were over 40 boats. I will provide an update if the fishing gets better.

COURTESY IS A KEY WORD. Just a word on courtesy. As the fishing gets better we are going to see more and more boats on the water and larger numbers of anglers fishing from the bank. PLEASE give everyone their space. There is no need to get right on top of another angler. All you will accomplish is to either loose your fish to his motor or anchor and provide a way to accomplish the same for him. The river is a big place and if you see someone trolling, don't get right into the middle of the trolling pattern and drop an anchor or stop to start jigging. There are many places on the river for all of us to fish and A LITTLE COURTESY WILL GO A LONG WAY TO MAKE YOUR DAY A BETTER ONE.

This is George the most helpful fisherman on the planet. He caught this 22 pounder on the American River using a M2 Flat Fish with a GARLIC sardine wrap. Don't laugh, George catches lots of fish using herbs as enticement. .

This is my grandson Anthony. He landed this 19 pound 11 ounce Salmon at the mouth of the Feather River just above the dock at the Verona Marina. He was using an Uncle Larry's Spinner, green and silver and was at anchor. This was his first Salmon of the year and was caught on July 23.

This was one of the fish caught on opening day, July 16, at Verona on the Sacramento River. It was a beautiful 17 pound buck. What a way to start the season

This 13 pounder came from the Sacramento River at Verona on August 23. As you can see, the fish are just beautiful. They still have scales.

A 15 and 22 pounder caught, guess where? That’s right. Verona on August 11.

Anthony with a 17 pound 13 ounce Salmon caught in the American River on a green Uncle Larry's Spinner. September 3, 1999, his last day of summer vacation.

Caught these two beautiful fish on October 5 on the American River. One is 12 pounds and the other is 8. What a great day.

The fishing this year was spotty. The Feather was great but the American was slow at best. This was the worst year I have had on the American out of the past 10 years. I hope the run is not over but if it is, I hope next year is better.

If this is the end of the Salmon, check back in about a month for Delta updates. I will start fishing for Stripers and Sturgeon in about a month. At that time the site will be updated for the type of fishing that is happening throughout the year.

Well, that's it for now.  Hope you found it interesting and look forward to hearing some of your fish stories.
