The Old River Rat on the American River

October 1999

Well, the weather has been terrible and we just haven't been able to get out to try to catch that BIG one. First the water was too low, too warm and too clear. Then the water was too high, too fast and too dirty. The weather and the water are just starting to get good and I hope the fish will cooperate and they will start biting.

The Shad are starting to appear in the Sacramento River but so far, it seems the American River has been too cold, 54 to 56 degrees.

The Striper fishing has been real slow but the water is starting to warm up and with the increase in temperature, it should get better real soon. At least that is what I am hoping will happen.

1999 Salmon Page

Although I haven't been doing well, some of my fishing buddies have been doing OK. Below are some of their fish that have been caught in the past two weeks.

These two Stripers were caught in the Sacramento River the week of May 1st by Don Capers.

An 11 pounder and a 12 pounder.

This 13 pounder was caught by Glen on May 15 on the

Mokelumne River.

Earl Wilson hasn't been doing bad either. Here is an 11 pounder

Caught on the Mokelumne River on May 19.

Well, Glen did it again. He got this 12 pounder trolling on the

Mokelumne River on May 15.

Well, that is the update for today. I hope the fishing picks up so I can update the site every week from now on.

I left the Strugeon pictures below for now but as the Striper fishing gets better and the Salmon season starts, the Sturgeon will have to go.

George and Donna McGee, some friends here in Orangevale went out on January 21 and caught these two beautiful Sturgeon. One was 62 inches and the other was 68 inches. They were fishing around the Moth Ball Fleet using Ghost Shrimp. Now for the rest of the story. They went back the week of February 14, and did it again. They got two more keepers but did not get pictures of them due to the weather. It was raining so hard George didn't want to ruin his camera.

GREAT JOB GEORGE AND DONNA

I guess Glen is good luck because on December 22, Glen and Earl were anchored near Sandy Beach, Rio Vista, fishing for Sturgeon. Well, Earl's rod started to go down, he feed it some line, then set the hook and about 30 to 40 yards below the boat a very large Sturgeon jumped completely out of the water. They tried to fight the fish from the anchor but knew it was not going to work by the way the fish was handling the fisherman. They threw the anchor rope over board and the fish took them for a 55 minute ride. At the end of the ride, Earl had landed this 80+ inch Sturgeon, no telling how much it weighed, probably 150+ pounds, but it was quite obvious that his fish was TOOOO large to keep and would live to take another shrimp from another fisherman, on another day. So they took these pictures to support their story and released the fish back to the Sacrament River Delta. This is what it is all about. GREAT JOB Earl!!!
